federal charges against a group of at least 30 well-to-do business owners, lawyers, a
This just broke in Minneapolis. There are rumors the Feds are involved in the DD case but we have no idea if this is related. Looking for more details.

PROSTITUTION: Minneapolis police are pursuing federal charges against a group of at least 30 well-to-do business owners, lawyers, accountants and mortgage bankers who frequented a high-priced prostitution operation. The men, in their early-40s to mid-60s, called themselves "The Minnesota Good Guys."

How might the Feds be involved?

If they wrote reviews they may be "encouraging" which could be a Federal Trafficking Act Violation. Yes, covers in private consenting adults. It is "extreme trafficking" if forced into prostitution.

Need a Lawrence vs Texas constitutional defense as I have written a great deal about.

In reviewing other articles in the Mpls StarTribune lots made out of a huge street prostitution problem in certain areas. But assume the referred to Fed bust is in private consenting adults. Maybe if "well-to-do" they can pay for a strong constitutional defense which if successful would benefit the entire U.S. industry.

I have a Mpls interest since I grew up in Richfield, and lived in Edina and St Louis Park (all Mpls suburbs) before moving to Phoenix about 25 yrs ago.

RE: federal charges against a group of at least 30 well-to-do business owners, lawyers, a
(Note there was a detailed article in the print edition of Sunday's Mpls Star/Tribune but it is not online) Comments from Mn folks:

From E-mail to Dave:
I did see that sugar daddy news bit in your forum. After, I read the article in the local paper about the incident here…I realize that I have met the so-called leader of the nice guys group. Actually, a lot of people knew that he was doing some of this and have told him to stop.

He is a guy that is in a wheel chair because of polio. If I remember he has to have a nurse with him most of the time, he also has needs oxygen…so he has some sort of machine for this. This is really going to look great on the news, the cops going after a handicap person like that…but that does not matter to them…waste of money.

I have followed the DD case down there in Phoenix, by reading your posts ... So, I have used your info to help ladies and gents here in MN. I have received a lot of e-mails from the ladies thanking me for putting them up

Comments on another board:
They listed TER a couple of times in the article, with craigslist kind of cleaned up LE will be searching for other means of targeting providers and this is a pretty easy place to do it with reviews posted and who is visting or offering any particular week. For some dumb reaosn reviews and providers also seem to like to name exact towns of services provided which makes it just as easy as on craigslist for local PD to target those providers.

This is a "hobby" that is meant to fly under the radar.....kind of pissed me off when TER started advertising so much in mainstream publications like Playboy. Shine the light away from this, not directly at it.
---
To quote the newspaper article: "Investigators say it is one of the most unusual prostitution rings they have ever seen in Minnesota."
Also, an officer was quoted with saying: "I don't know of anything this organized happening anywhere in the country."
In conclusion, not one piece of information in the article will prevent me from booking a session with well-regarded (local or touring providers.

A provider says:
I still think that it would behoove me to stay away from a market in which over two dozen clients are under surveillance and four providers have been flipped by the feds.

Providers who think that a reference or "screening" information are a panacea for scrutiny brought about by situations like these are misinformed and frankly, sitting ducks.
--
The full story was fairly detailed and was definitely not a great thing for TER and the higher $-level hobbyists...

Another E-mail to me from Mpls hobbyist

Yes, TER was mentioned…probably that much ( 3 times referenced TER). The cop’s contact John425 from TER because of what he was saying on the board and his reviews…I think that they used TER’s e-mail system

I know that TER has blocked the Minnesota ladies from the provider’s board. Giamarie did post on TER/mn ate last night asking other women if they can get into…but the post was removed last night

It’s a huge article in the trib, naturally the cops are making it out as something so wrong

My Fast Pass is a verification board in Mpls that folks subscribe to similar to Preferred 411 etc.

This post is on that board:

On June 3, 2009, Nora “Tiger St. Claire” Anderson was arrested by Minneapolis Police during a search warrant. This event followed an investigation initiated more than a year ago by Minneapolis Police in cooperation with various federal agencies to include the FBI and Department of Homeland Security. Extensive physical and electronic surveillance, as well as undercover operations, preservation and review of numerous email accounts and other investigative techniques were used during this investigation.

At this time, Detectives from Minneapolis Police Department’s Violent Offender Task Force are in possession of an extensive subscriber database for My Fast Pass. As part of our ongoing criminal investigation, it is our intention to have face to face contact with people on this list, to include men and women. If you feel it is in your best interest to have input into the time and place of this meeting you can email us at the address below.

Companion Comments about Mpls case:

all of the girls stated they went to minnesota voluntarily
but the cop/federal agent/whatever in charge of the investigation said that women become escorts because they need money.
i wonder why the hell he goes to work ?

he also said its very dangerous because a miami companions girl was killed last summer
i guess cops never get killed on the job.
this case really doesnt make sense

they infiltrate the group with 3-4 cops over a year
they put members on 24 hour surveillance whenever they discovered one
nobody has even been arrested
and they are really only sounding like they are going to charge john (if they even charge him)

thats quite a bit of work
i mean i'm glad that the guys arent getting into trouble but this was a huge federal investigation spanning the course of a year, monitoring phone calls, emails and even monitored a session that they broke up when it obvious sex was being initiated..

fun job
thats the only reason i can think of for putting that much man power into it.

thats the county attorney who started the group aka john425 (former long ago Hennepin County County Attoney)

i also recieved word a few days that an increase in federal funding was approved by the senate.. the funds are to be used to go after the customers of prostitutes.

i have always said that these freaking reviews describing explicit sex acts are dumb dumb dumb

bank robbers dont post reviews on the different banks they've gotten away with robbing

and they got emails from your ip address making arrangements to meet the girl.. some of which described sex acts ... dumb dumb dumb

guys do this shit all the freaking time.... as soon as i tell them that i've verified their references, they'll start emailing all kinds of explicit acts....... i always tell guys, i think its great you trust me but i'm not so sure you should be trusting that this email is only going to be read by me... same with phone conversations... they always say, well i'm not a cop... i always say well neither am i but do you know who else is listening ... they say no and i say neither do i.

this minnesota case is one of those times when the girl WAS legit, she was established with an excellent review history and she was being recommended by a trusted reviewer

the established escort comes to town, the trusted reviewer (now working with police) posts his review and then books natalia some customers, the feds go and wire the room for sound and busted both natalia and the customer
then they take over natalia's email

this is one of those cases that will give a person nightmares
this sucks
how can we be going backwards

i hope and i hope and i hope that they got someone who will fight
there were alot of attorneys involved in the group

WCCO has a short article not nearly as detailed as the Mpls Star print only article per those that have read the Star article

Former Co. Attorney May Be Charged For Pimping
http://wcco.com/local/john.st.marie.2.1035973.html

Minneapolis would charge with pimping and than worked with the FBI which is probably for Mann Act. The police involved are in the violent crimes unit and have been involved in other prostitution cases they work with the FBI on also. It makes sense local police obsessed with adult sexuality bring in the FBI if any Fed laws broken

The details show it was likely a Mann Act violation because in exchange for free sex and to be reviewed by his Nice Guys group according to reports he PAID her transportation. Thus probably a Mann Act violation.

But again a year investigation all for consenting adults in private

RE: federal charges against a group of at least 30 well-to-do business owners, lawyers, a
An interesting take on the Mpls situation someone sent me.

This has nothing to do with if BB is involved or not.

In Minneapolis we have the violent offender task force busting a group of hobbyists but no arrests after a huge year long investigation in conjunction with FBI and Homeland Security.

That is a big investigation just to get no arrests. I understand from MN folks that this task force is normally used for taking down major drug smuggling operations -- the big guys.

The task force is used to take down major drug smuggling operations ... but they were looking to take down nice guys....who had girls coming up from colulmbia.

Maybe the feds are going to assume the nice guy identities and go undercover ... they'll make the columbian hookers agree to get them into columbia and into the drug source inner circle

Someone pointed out to me the post on TER from March on the MN Board that makes sense and other media reports have tied in prior Columbian / Mpls connection with drugs and prostitution.

The post was made by John who was the target of the sting but as far as I know has not been actually arrested for promoting the gals etc.

"NOT AN UNUSUAL TACTIC, the Feds are after bigger fish here...
Posted by john425 3/20/2009

It would seem that the Feds are after much bigger fish in this situation. The Detroit, Michigan, Office of Investigations, US Immigration And Customs Enforcement (ICE), apparently is leading the investigation of Miami Ultimate(MMU) and Marco, probably because Detroit is the first city where ICE discovered the true business of MU and was able to obtain information from the Latina illegal immigrants who ICE had detained.
http://www.google.com/search?q=Rafael+%2...US317US318

They have probably offered immunity from prosecution and deportation with a promise of a green card in the future if the ladies cooperate with the investigation. ICE probably wants to know the names of MU agents who helped the ladies to illegally enter the US, the names of other people who helped to finance the operations of MU, etc. I don't believe that it is unusual or suspicious that ICE is using the MU website to reach out to former workers of the Agency, most of whom were native Spanish speakers. Notice that the request for information is written in both English and Spanish. The Feds are not after the ladies or the john's, they are after The Big Fish, not Marco. Marco is merely the tip of the ICEberg.

Dave notes Micro was arrested and a LE note which seems based on various discussions to be legitimate is at the prior agency site at http://www.miamiultimate.com/
---
As someone pointed out regarding the sting in Mpls:
I dont think this is hobby related. I think maybe they are just using the hobby as their cover to bring down a columbian drug lord ?

The feds will infiltrate the colubian drug operation by pretending to be wealthy hobbysits and the columbian hookers are workiing with them against their own drug source.
---
Dave notes this also makes sense but obviously we do not know for sure. But it certainly seems odd no one has been arrested after all the media attention to the prostitution investigation, Nice guys group and the myfreepass website.

When I read about the violent offender task force being involved in a in private consenting adult prostiutiton investigation I assumed it was the usual over reaction to what some think is such a serious issue, even while legal in almost all the world except the U.S. with no big issues.

But with the DD 100 arrest big deal in Phoenix it is clear many LE agencies are hot to trot to get rid of consenting adult in private sexwork. Big busts in CA lately and across the nation not just on street hookers which should be illegal. but on private consenting adults.

RE: federal charges against a group of at least 30 well-to-do business owners, lawyers, a
Case against 'Nice Guys' prostitution ring ready for prosecutors
July 13, 2009 - Minneapolis StarTribune
Since word spread last month that Minneapolis police had shut down the high-dollar prostitution ring whose clients called themselves "The Minnesota Nice Guys," nearly all of the 30 alleged clients or their attorneys have contacted police to find out how much trouble they're in or if their involvement could be kept quiet, according to the case's principal investigators.

Some men sobbed to Sgts. Grant Snyder and Matt Wente that they had a compulsion and had tried to stop. On the flip side, several "providers" or prostitutes also contacted investigators, and Snyder said they all repeated the same points: They found the business degrading and shameful, but needed the money. And they, too, had tried to quit.

The yearlong investigation is now wrapped up, and Snyder said they expect to present the case to the Hennepin County attorney's office this week. The investigation focused on John St. Marie, a former assistant Hennepin County attorney who they allege ran the Nice Guys ring. While the county attorney is expected to consider possible felony charges, it's also possible that a portion of the case could be turned over to the U.S. attorney's office for consideration of federal charges tied to interstate elements of the prostitution.

"With all the Nice Guys we've talked to, we've made it clear we can't predict what might happen to them," Snyder said. "We knew all the men associated with this group, and we told them a month ago to, 'Come in and talk to us before we find you.' "

Because St. Marie worked for Hennepin County, the case most likely will be handled by another county attorney's office. St. Marie, 65, of Minneapolis, isn't under arrest, and his attorney, Jim Dahlquist, said he continues to be concerned this case will be prosecuted more aggressively because of his client's former position. Since he hasn't seen any evidence against St. Marie or a criminal complaint, he declined to comment on the allegations.

"This guy has devoted his life to helping the underdog in society," Dahlquist said. "He himself is the greatest example of not giving up on oneself and achieving in spite of things."

As an attorney who handled civil commitments, St. Marie, who retired in 2003, locked up some of society's most unstable criminals. He received plaques for excellent work. But three years ago, police said, St. Marie starting recruiting the men who would become the Nice Guys from the Erotic Review, an international website for self-described "hobbyists" looking for high-priced escorts. Police also allege he gained members from MyFastPass.com, which was the Twin Cities' largest locally owned prostitution website. Snyder and Grant said that last month they shut down MyFastPass.com because of their work on the Nice Guys investigation.

Wente said the investigation into MyFastPass.com is wrapping up but could trigger investigations by police in other cities.

Not a typical sex ring
Snyder and Wente, who have worked on sex trafficking cases for the department's Violent Offender Task Force for several years, said the Nice Guys is one of the most unusual prostitution rings they have ever seen in Minnesota. The Nice Guys, business owners, lawyers, accountants and mortgage bankers in their early 40s to mid-60s, communicated via e-mail. Synder said members called themselves Nice Guys because they have clean backgrounds, regard themselves as trustworthy, and didn't mistreat the women.

The investigators said that St. Marie, who uses a wheelchair because of childhood polio, flew escorts in from Florida, put them up at some of Minneapolis' nicest hotels and arranged appointments. Some of the Nice Guys who picked up escorts at the airport or otherwise helped the ring operate could face felony charges, police said. Authorities typically charge ordinary johns with misdemeanor solicitation of a prostitute.

The Nice Guys investigation started from an anonymous e-mail from a john who said St. Marie was marketing illegal immigrants as prostitutes. The john learned about St. Marie's services from the Erotic Review, where people praised him for the quality of women he brought to Minnesota, Snyder said.

Investigators eventually connected with one of St. Marie's escorts and persuaded her to work with police to bust other Nice Guys. None has been arrested.

How the case grew
Wente and Snyder said they built an extensive case against the Nice Guys through, but not limited to, physical and electronic surveillance, undercover operations, and examination of websites, e-mail accounts and databases. They also executed seven search warrants.

Because many of the Nice Guys are members on MyFastPass, Snyder and Wente, before shutting down the website last month, posted a message about their investigations and how they'd identified more than 300 providers and johns who used MyFastPass. Prompted by that message and word of mouth, 25 Nice Guys or their attorneys came forward to police. Investigators also got calls from an additional 25 johns and escorts who use the site.

"About 95 percent of the women told us they were sexually abused at some time in their lives," Wente said. "They don't feel they are in control of their lives." Snyder said they put the women in touch with social workers. The investigators won't seek charges against the women because they consider them victims. But from comments on message boards such as the Erotic Review, Wente says he can see their investigation has chilled the climate for online prostitution in the Twin Cities.

One thing Snyder wanted to make clear:
"Just because the Nice Guys were business professionals, they absolutely won't receive any special treatment when it comes to considering charges," he said. "It doesn't matter what their name is or where they work."

Some Reader Comments:
Shaking my head- Nice to see our tax dollars are being spent fighting "serious" crime. Why not get the drug dealers off the streets, or go after the pimps trafficing diseased, drug-addicted streetwalkers into our cities, some of which underage... Instead they are focusing on guys who apparently treated the girls well. Going after girls that make $400/hr lying on their back.
---
"[The prostitutes] found the business degrading and shameful, but needed the money."
I felt pretty much the same way when I was working in retail. The only difference is, prostitution pays better.
---
What does this accomplish?
How can I take this seriously? The johns are getting dates with court and the prostitutes are being left alone to pursue other uh...dates..of their own. This is the oldest profession known to mankind. Do the police really think busting a high profile group is going to stop prostitution, particularly when there is no repercussion for the people PROVIDING the service? Don't get me wrong, the nice guys or whatever deserve what they are getting and should be criminally prosecuted, but seriously...letting the prostitutes continue on with no punishment tells me this was nothing more than a PR move. Maybe they are trying to get the gang taskforce fiasco off the front pages lol.
---
So who's being exploited more?
A woman who's flown first-class, put up in fancy hotels, and who makes six figures a year working a few hours per week -- OR -- Somebody who works full time, yet makes sub-poverty wages, and is afraid to say anything about his employer's violation of workplace laws for fear of being fired? Let's spend tax dollars protecting working people who are ACTUALLY exploited!
